A cigar humidor is more than just a storage box — it is the guardian of your cigar collection's flavor, aroma, and longevity. Before you place your first cigar inside, you must properly season and prepare the humidor to establish the ideal humidity environment. Without this critical first step, your cigars risk drying out, cracking, or losing their carefully crafted character. This guide walks you through every stage of the process, from initial setup to long-term care, so you can enjoy every smoke at its best.
1. Assemble Your Supplies
Everything you need can be sourced from a local hardware store or pharmacy. The key item is a hygrometer — a small instrument that tracks moisture levels inside your humidor. Alongside that, gather the following:
- Distilled water (never tap water)
- A clean plastic bag
- A soft cloth or clean rag
- A new, unscented sponge
2. Calibrate Your Hygrometer
A reliable hygrometer is the backbone of humidity management. To make sure yours reads accurately, dampen a towel using lukewarm water only, then wrap the hygrometer inside and let it rest for approximately 30 minutes.
Unwrap it and check the reading — it should fall between 95% and 97%. If yours has a calibration feature, adjust it according to the manufacturer's guidelines. If the reading already falls in range without adjustment, your hygrometer is good to go.
3. Clean the Interior
If your humidor is brand new, a thorough cleaning is usually unnecessary. However, if you are reconditioning a pre-owned unit, you should clear out any old tobacco residue or debris by spraying compressed air throughout the interior. Follow up by gently wiping down all interior surfaces with a lightly dampened cloth to remove dust and lingering particles.

1. Soak the Humidifier in Distilled Water
Most cigar humidors ship with a small, round humidification device. If yours did not include one, they are readily available online or at any tobacconist. Fill a bowl with distilled water and fully submerge the humidifier with the face pointing downward. Allow it to soak for two to three minutes.
Once removed, gently blot away excess moisture with a paper towel. Remember — only use distilled water. Tap water contains minerals that can clog the humidifier and damage the interior cedar lining over time.
2. Line the Interior with a Plastic Bag and Dampened Sponge
Open your humidor and lay a plastic bag flat along the bottom. Next, dampen the sponge with distilled water and place it directly on top of the plastic lining. This creates a controlled moisture source that helps the cedar wood absorb humidity evenly throughout the interior.
3. Mount the Hygrometer and Humidifier
These components are typically installed on the inner side of the humidor lid. Check the interior to confirm where the mounting points are located — most models have clearly designated positions. If you are unsure, refer to the instruction manual that came with your unit.
Once both are securely in place, close the lid and position the humidor in a stable spot where it will remain undisturbed. Allow it to sit sealed for 12 to 24 hours.
4. Repeat the Full Process
After the initial 12-to-24-hour period, open the humidor and repeat the entire preparation cycle. Re-soak the humidifier, re-line the interior with a fresh plastic bag and damp sponge, reinstall both components, then seal it once more for another 12 to 24 hours.
When complete, your humidity reading should sit comfortably between 65% and 75%. A slight spike above this range immediately after finishing is normal — give it a few minutes to settle.

1. Store Your Cigars Correctly
Before placing cigars into the humidor, always remove the cellophane wrapper. A wrapped cigar cannot breathe properly, which defeats the purpose of seasoning. The whole point of preparation is to create an environment where your cigars absorb just the right amount of moisture to stay fresh, flavorful, and ready to enjoy.
2. Minimize How Often You Open the Lid
Every time you lift the lid, moisture escapes. Make a habit of opening your humidor only when you need a cigar — reach in, select one quickly, and close it right away. Frequent or prolonged openings will cause the humidity to fluctuate, which is the enemy of consistent cigar storage.
3. Re-wet When Necessary
Keep an eye on the hygrometer. Humidity should remain steadily between 65% and 75%. If you notice it dropping, it is time to re-season using the same distilled-water method you used during the initial preparation. Periodically check the water level in the humidifier as well — a dry humidifier cannot do its job.
4. Choose the Right Storage Location
Placement matters more than most people realize. Keep your cigar humidor away from direct sunlight, heat registers, air conditioning vents, and any source of strong indoor lighting. A drawer or enclosed cabinet is ideal — it offers temperature stability and shields the humidor from environmental fluctuations. If you have curious children or pets at home, make sure the humidor is stored well out of reach.
